Verry Elleegant has won the 2021 Melbourne Cup, finishing one place ahead of heavy favourite Incentivise as crowds returned to Flemington Racecourse.
The mare beat out rival Incentivise on the final stretch and Spanish Mission who rounded out the top three. It’s the first mare to win the race that stops a nation since Makybe Diva in 2005.
Sydney jockey James McDonald continued his good form by winning four races including the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Verry Elleegant has improved her record. The mare’s resume now includes a Caulfield Cup, third place in the Cox plater, eight other Group 1 wins, over $14 million in career earnings and now the iconic Melbourne Cup.
“I love her to bits” McDonald said in his post-race interview.
“I can safely say she is a champion now.”
Last year’s winner Twilight Payment, finished in 11th position.
