Trudeau’s Liberal party will need to form a minority government after winning the Canadian election. The party were projected to win 157 seats, 13 short of the 170 required to secure the majority.
Trudeau won the 2015 election with high expectations from progressive Canadian voters – the Trudeau government were promising “real change”.
However his actual track record proved less solid, disappointing environmental decisions and negative findings from an ethics watchdog damaged his sway with progressive voters.
Trudeau has been in the media for all the wrong reasons this past year, after several photos emerged of him in blackface. Trudeau has stated he wasn’t able to remember how many times he had worn it. This was a shock to his supporters and a blow to the politicans image – which had previously been one which had capitalised on inclusion and diversity.
For some progressive voters – the second chance for Trudeau is a welcome difference to the overtly conservative government south of the Canadian border. Time will tell whether he will put his money where his mouth is.
