Two truck drivers are lucky to be alive after a collision caused a massive fire in Wetherill Park on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to Victoria Street at around 6.30am following reports of an accident. They were confronted with thick smoke and a fire that was at risk of getting out of control. The fire was contained 30 minutes after they were called to the scene.
“Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene by NSW ambulance paramedics” police said.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Joe Ibrahim said that the two men were taken to Liverpool Hospital and were in a stable condition with minor injuries to their face and chest.
“It’s truly a miracle that they weren’t more seriously injured.” Ibrahim said.
The cause of the fire was attributed to one of the trucks carrying lithium batteries; a highly toxic substance. Buildings within a 100 metre radius of the crash site were evacuated and remained empty for the rest of the day.
Fairfield City Police are investigating the incident further.
