Climate conscious Australians have become part of the largest e-petition in the country’s history. Hundreds of thousands of people are calling for a climate change emergency to be declared in the petition delivered to Federal Parliament.
The petition, which was hosted online by the parliament of Australia, attracted 370,004 signatures by its 11:59pm deadline last night. That makes it the largest official e-petition to parliament. That number is three times higher than the previous record holder, which was the petition calling for the removal of GST on menstrual products.
If Federal parliament responds to the will of the people in the same timely way, it might be possible that we see a vote on the floor of parliament in the new year. But for many Australians in drought affected areas it may not come soon enough.
